New to (south) Bay Area: where to live?

I agree with the other posters to live near where you want to kite. I would avoid living in the east bay with a San Jose commute. I lived/worked in Santa Clara and quickly grew bored with the area within a few months and moved again as soon as I could. Caltrain is a nice alternative to driving. Bought a motorcycle for the commute along I280. That was years ago and I feel that commuting is a lot more dangerous now that cell phones are a common distraction.
Where in Australia are you coming from? My brother just visited Brisbane.
