My amazing Honda pilot is starting to show its age, and I'll need to get a new ride.

How is the longevity/reliability of VW vehicles? thinking of getting the TDI Diesel wagon.....other option is the more boring Toyota Prius.

Would love people's feedback who own or maintain VW's (you know who I'm talking to).

Shout out for the Prius. mine is 10 years old and going strong. With the back seat down I easily fit three kites, my twin-tip and directional boards, and all my other gear with no problem. Plus I average 40 mpg.

i love my 2014 jetta sportswagon tdi.

can't say anything about longevity, yet, but is very nice. getting close to 40 mpg around town. . it's not your grandma's diesel, quiet and plenty of pickup with the turbo. inside it's comfortable, roomy with most of the latest bells & whistles. easily carries enough gear for two people.

diesel prices don't seem to have a whole lot to do with the price of gasoline. currently it's less than regular. when i bought the car it was a penny more than premium. going to the gas station half as much itself is nice.

My wife bought a VW and it has had nothing but problems. It drives nice, but from a mechanics perspective I would never buy one myself. Coming from a Honda, I expect you'll be disappointed in the longetivity factor.

I had an Audi wagon and found the repairs and maintenance costs excruciating. Like, everything was a black box that had to come from Germany. Everything. Maybe things have gotten better, but I've had Subarus ever since that have been happily neglected with minimal to non-existent repairs and maintenance (not sure about the newest one - there are electronics everywhere that I'm sure are going to crap all over me eventually).

TDI sportwagon !

We have a 2013 Sportwagon TDI with about 20,000 miles on it.

No issues so far and lovin the 40+ mpg.

We replaced a Honda with 225,000 miles on it. Had the same concerns of reliability. You can always buy an extended warranty which are relatively inexpensive. Cheap insurance for those expensive major repairs.

As of I think 2015, Sportwagons are a new body style and have been tweaked mechanically. Also, they are no longer made in Germany for our market. I believe the current run of vehicles for the U.S. are being manufactured in Mexico. Ask mechanic Kurt about them.

Subaru all the way! Love my '06 forester which fits a twin tip (up to about 132) a bin for gear, and three kites under the privacy cover in the back. Fits WAY more if you don't care about gear being seen. The newer ones also really upped the MPG for an AWD vehicle with the new continuous variable transmission (I think 34mpg highway), but who knows if that will cause issues down the line. New Prius has the CVT as well. I love the GTI and my friend really is loving her new golf but had another friend with a new golf (around 2008) that gave her nothing but issues. If you want a car that never dies, you probably want a Volvo, I see so many late 80s Volvos still romping around.
