While I was kiting around Marina Bay, my wife reported a frontage road kiter at berkeley who had stopped traffic. She sent me the pic. Another 20 feet and he would've made the evening news...
NOTE: I've updated the subject, didn't realize "Kook" was urban slang for a surfing poseur. thought it was a kinder term for someone who made an error of judgement. Not implying that people are wrong for trying new things. Was more implying that not taking responsibility for actions that can impact others is cause for concern. This happens at every skill level. We share the resources with windsurfers, kayakers, boaters, etc. and from the looks of this guy, bikers too!

It is never too late to be called a kook...we just need to be on the look out to educate and yell if nessasary to prevent this.

just to remind ..
kite in hand when you reach sand-
means that you wrap up your lines and get to your kite BEFORE you reach land
or, you can climb up one line and get to your kite BEFORE you reach land.
Also this is NOT the spot you rig and launch from or get blow into and TRY to self land at.
Don't come ashore here (at frontage road beach) with kite in the air,
roll it up off shore and come ashore with kite in hand.
just because your kiting doesn't mean, you can inconvenient the many, because you don't want to tangle up your lines

I dunno Charlie - I might respectfully disagree with you on this one...
Imagine several (even just two) people drifting in with their kites down in the water, wrapping up their lines in preparation to land "kite in hand" on the tiny little beach at Pt. Emery. With 60+ feet of lines between the rider and the kite, I can't imagine a better way to clog up the launch/land zone at what is already a *very* tight launch such as Pt. Emery (a.k.a "Ashby" or "Berkeley"). I don't see how other riders could enter the water with other riders trying to exit with their kite/lines in the water, running perpendicular to the travel of anyone trying to leave the beach.
It seems to me this might work at a larger beach such as Alameda (where I know that's also supposed to be the rule, but certainly not the norm), but in the tight quarters at Pt. Emery, I just don't see how the "kite in hand" program will really work.
Maybe I'm missing something in your recommendation?

(I was at Pt. Emery yesterday, presumably when this picture and event happened, but didn't see any kites in the street, which is clearly a major no-no!)

Re: Who is trying to get us banned at Berkeley?
some of us came up with that saying FOR Ashby beach... not pt emery where we have a lz
that kite is over at the frontage road beach ..... you shouldn't launch there anyway
so riders washed in there should have kite in hand when they make sand....
and kirk if 2 kiters where wrapping up coming into the proper launch zone at pt emery
would you want to fight your way out?

Ha! You all have it wrong. I heard the guy asked his wife to give him a 'safe' launch, so she got in her car and nudged it right into the power zone. She was certainly being safe. You forgot to get the picture she took congratulating him as he flew past the windshield downwind, smiling the whole way. I think he cleared 80 and landed safely in Berkeley...

You're absolutely right, Charlie - I didn't recognize that the picture was of the beach in the middle of the frontage road and not right at the launch at Pt. Emery.
I agree 100% - there is NO place to safely land a kite if you haven't already pulled your safety, wrapped up your lines and gained control of your kite by the time you reach that little bit of sand.
My bad for mis-identifying the location of the picture. Thanks for making it clear, Charlie.
