Montara Beach

Hi All,

I have been to Montara Beach a couple of times recently observing decent wind conditions. But I have never seen anyone kiteboarding there.

Has anyone been there? Is there any particular reason why this wouldn't be a good spot?

I live in Montara and kite almost exclusively on the coast - somewhere around 100 - 120 days per year. I only kite Montara 3 or 4 times a year at best. That should tell you something.

If you're there and you think it looks kiteable, give it a try. Just be aware that the waves are ALWAYS bigger and heavier than they look, the shore break is devious and will try to break you and your board, and there's a huge wind hole in front of the restaurant. Other than that, it can be fun :)

@More Waves Please - So where do you usually go, if not Montara? Waddell is great, but it's a bit of a drive from Montara. Have you found any closer beaches that you'd be willing to share?

I've kited Montara as well and at no moment did it feel very safe. There are a lot of sketchy things going on about that spot as mentioned also including currents. As funky as Ocean Beach can be I would characterize it as a much safer spot and is just a hop from Montara / Pacifica. There are also kite-able days in HMB

Got to agree with sloughslut here, I'm not convinced that 45 min is that much of a drive.
But yeah, like aloha said, OB is less of a drive.

Wow - rustysam, I have to agree with sloughslut and le noun on this one. Where do you live and kite that 45 minutes is "a bit of a drive"? You must be pretty lucky.

There are tons of kiteable beaches between Ocean Beach and Monterey. I've even kited in Big Sur a few times. Different wind directions, different swells, different tides all work at one place or another. You just need to be observant, creative and willing to go out alone. It also doesn't hurt to waste a little gas to cruise the coast to see what's working when the usual spots aren't. I'd be afraid to know how much gas I've burned checking surf and wind over the past 20+ years.
