Biggest kite needed for Sherman Iskand

Post by peter19ue » Wed Dec 10, 2014 11:34 am

I plan on picking up some used gear this offseason and was wondering what would be the biggest kite size I would need for Sherman Island light wind days? I weight 180lbs. Thanks for your feedback.

No fair - you don't get to ask two questions in 1 thread ;^)

I've been out at Sherman on a 6m kite and there are some folks who have 5's in their quivers. When it gets *that* windy, you kind of have to decide what conditions you really want to be out in.

Ha! When it gets that windy I'm going to stick to windsurfing. So is seems that a 7, 9, and 12 should cover 90% of all conditions.

Depends what you mean by lightest wind. Sherman can blow 10 knots on a midday lull...

I'd say 14-16mph. Eventually I'd like to be on a foil so what is the least amount of wind you need for one of those. I want to get as much time on the water as possible!

Easy there little grasshopper.
I haven't tried foil board yet but it's a whole different ballgame from what I've heard so far.
Judging from what I've seen, if I'm on a 12m and a surfboard I see people on 9m with a foil to give you an idea.
14mph, you'll be good on a 12m on a regular board.

I know right gotta get the twin tip down first but I foil behind a boat and the sensation is incredible! Seems like a 7,9 and 12 will cover all conditions. I'm heading to LaVentana for a week in February for more lessons and can't wait. Good times for sure!!
