OBX kiter making a Last minute trip to BAY AREA

Post by srilinger » Tue Jul 08, 2014 9:34 pm

I joined this forum because I recently booked a ticket a bit spontaneously to visit california and oregon.

during this trip I want to see what the west coast has to offer in terms of kiting. I have wheels and will be traveling solo in the areas around santa cruz and san fran from 7/10-7/15. I have a wetsuit, of course.

I am asking for any combination of advice on where to go based on forecasted conditions, and company to ride with. i did check out the KITE BEACHES link on this forum,.. with the map, and that is great info. I am hoping to get a little local advice, and go where other kiters will be riding.
b/c It's more fun with company.

I’m a safe proficient rider. back rolls, loop transitions and such. I am comfortable in the open ocean, and tight inland slicks.

Any west coasters interested in having a east coast hookup? My boyfriend and I live in one of the windiest areas on the east coast with some great riding spots. check us out http://www.blownkiteboarding.com

anyhow. feel free to respond via forum, or call/text.

Crissy out under the Golden Gate Bridge is a must for every experienced tourist visiting the Bay Area. You're smart reading this forum's guides first. I'd keep it to cruising and sightseeing out there though, and save the fancier freestyle for 3rd or Sherman.
Waddell is the best ocean riding on the entire California coast this time of year, so don't miss that.

be cautious at crissy. it has world class riding and scenery and one of the few launches inside the bay with a sandy beach but every out of towner i talk to has had problems with the strong and unpredictable currents and flukey wind. avoid flood tide by all means. coast guard rescues are almost a daily occurrence. you wont see a lot of twin tips there. most regulars are on coarse boards or foils because a lot of times that's what it takes to get out and back to the beach reliably.

3rd ave and the delta are great although they can get a little crowded especially on weekends.

waddell and coastal points south for wave riding.

there are about a dozen other sites with varying conditions within an hour or so of downtown SF.

you can pm for more details.

I'm staying in santa cruz tonight, so I think I'm going to catch waddell tomorrow. The wind sensors were reading much higher than the forecast. so hopefully an 11mph forecast will shape up to be more like 18-25 like the sensors showed for today.

Hey, thanks for the heads up on crissy.
it looks like such a beautiful kiting experience, but I better hold off. I had to leave my bigger kite at home with the school so I am only travelling with an 8m and 12m switchblades and a twintip board. The 12m I can ride from 15-25.

Thanks for all the advice and info everyone!

I plan to head to waddell around late morning/midday tomorrow.

Does waddell usually beat the forecast? today it was only forecasted at 12mph, but sensors showed 18-25.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm also coming into town Thursday - Saturday and wanted to know best family friendly sites where my wife and son can also hang out and watch...

I have my 7/9/12/14 Switchblades and my big twin tip. As for skills, 32 miles on my 9M at the event site/hood river no issue but still working to improve my toe side riding. I do a lot of offshore riding in socal, but I'm happy to leave Crissy field for another trip once I have nailed my surfboard transitions...

Is benecia, treasure island options???

Thanks,
Dwayne

For the next few days, Sherman island will be a great place to go kite and bring the family along.
Coast and third ave are forecasted to get back to life this weekend, but SW flow and weak wind at those spots for tomorrow and Friday. So not recommended.
GO DELTA OR EAST BAY! _+_+
