I am always a bit torn on using a kite leash in waves. In bigger stuff, and especially big OB (where there is so little space between waves) I usually take it off.
In small waves, and especially at that offshore wind spot, I like to keep it on. I have my leash attached to the front of my harness because I have been dragged underwater backwards and had NO chance of reaching the eject on the back of my harness.
Even if you need it back there for freestyle, move it up front somewhere if you're keeping it on in waves.
There are no rules to this, just use good judgment. Obviously what you'd do in summer ankle-slapping waves at Waddell is different from what you need to do in overhead 30mph Ocean beach.

Re: Tragedy at Ocean Beach
All,
Can anyone think of anything we might do (as a community) to help his family during this awful time? Local housing offers?
Ocean Beach is a spot I've windsurfed for over 15 years - it really hits home when something like this happens so close.

Re: Tragedy at Ocean Beach
All,
My name is Matt and I am one of the guys from Tahoe that drove down to Ocean Beach with Scott. I would like to thank everyone that was involved in the rescue and those who gave us support. The kiting scene in the bay area is awesome. I was truly touched to see riders looking out for each others safety. I am fairly new to kiting and Sunday I lost my board while riding at Ocean Beach. Someone picked it up and brought it back to me. There was always someone nearby checking up on me when I was down in the water. I believe we have a personal responsibility to keep an eye on everyone around us when we are out riding.
Please be careful out there and do not hesitate to check on someone you think may be in trouble.
RIP Scott.

This is very upsetting news - I echo the feeling that 'it really hits home when something like this happens so close.'. Sincerest condolences to you Matt, and to Scott's family and other friends. Very sorry for your loss.
