In 9 seasons of kiting, I've yet to see a single person subscribe to this, anywhere, even at Alameda where, I believe, it's supposed to be 'the thing'.

Can someone explain to me what this means and how one would implement it? Is it for real? Have you ever seen anyone actually do this?

What do you think, people joining the clinic should bring their own equipment and their smallest kite
Yes, absolutely. Everyone should bring their OWN gear. There are several reasons for this:
1. Self-launch (particularly) and self-landing can be rough on kites. Thrash your own gear! ;^)
2. Different bars require different landing technique. It's better that people practice and become familiar with their own gear.

Thanks Vincent!

I'm in as a student. I think Waddell can be good place to practice too. Wide sandy beach. Not many beach goers.

Crissy on a sunny day is easily the best place to practice self land and launch.

What aloha said. And this video that was already posted are key.

Then practice at a big beach. OB when it's not very windy is perfect. Just find a spot without many people. Even on a crowded day there's still plenty of room.

The most important thing I think to remember about self landing without implements of any sort is once you walk up the front lines hold them tight and do not let go. You can't get hurt this way. The kite can't fly if you are hanging onto one or two front lines only.

It might flip over and flail around the window once or twice until it rests directly downwind of you but this is not dangerous unless there are people nearby.

So just make sure people are not nearby.

If you are unsure about holding the front lines try walking your kite upwind by the inside bridles some time. This is the same as holding the leading edge which is the same as holding the front lines down near the bar. As long as you are not pulling in on the steering lines (attached to the bar) in any way you should be good.

Bump

Is anyone still interested in practicing/tutoring self landing this coming Saturday, 5/9 at OB (wind permitting)?

Bring your own gear and common sense and good attitude.

Thanks

Assuming others are still interested/available, I'm still happy to help with this on Saturday (May 9th). at Ocean Beach. Please chime in in the comments below if you're planning to attend.

Fog/no wind cancels. I'll update timing as the forecast gets closer.

well years ago new kiters where dragging into the lower part of alameda beach.. no kiters where down there then just joe public and the kites coming ashore were terrorizing
the park complained and we came up with "kite in hand when you hit sand"
when you don't have good kite control and come ashore on a crowed beach and cant self land with control....

it means you roll up your lines and get your hand on your kite ....aka self rescue....
Sunday at alameda I saw this going on, but only boardsports lessons where doing it
it is also a good for frontage road beach at Berkeley the one just 80 feet from the freeway

it is better to error on the side of safety ......

now how about the body drag out thing to start a session
