Good conversation, crew! Glad you're OK, Nick!!!

I'd also be happy to help do a self-launch/self-land clinic with Vincent and Phil. Maybe not in 20+...

I was in La Ventana a few weeks ago with Gerry Lopez and his wife Toni, goofing around showing him how to self-land while we were waiting for the wind to come up. Within about 5 minutes there were 10 people trying the technique. It ended up being a self-land flash-mob!

Also note - as has been previously mentioned - the technique you use depends on where the "Y" of your front lines is located. If you can reach the upper front line (i.e. Slingshot, Naish bar), you'll do one thing. If your "Y" is further up the lines and can't be reached (i.e. F-One, RRD, etc.) you'll use a different technique.

Cool, hanging out with a surfing legend! Did Gerry reciprocate by sharing his tube-riding secrets?

What happened to the motto, kite in hand when you hit the sand? I hope you learned something from this experience, thank you for sharing with others. When speed and power increase, it's an eye opener when "regular" techniques no longer work.
On a lighter note, leave it to an old school legend to have the coolest technique to self launch and land.

I'd like to take you (all) up on the offer.
How about a date in mid May? 9th or 16th open for anyone? Is anyone else interested?

Hahaha!
I wonder how those waimam self launch and land techniques would do with 22m lines. Lo)%

Unless your name is "waimam", I would highly recommend that you don't try this.

May 9th is good for me.

If this works for others, I propose we pencil it in our calendars and watch the forecast. Ocean Beach seems like a good first choice with other location options to be announced as we get a better picture of the wind that day.

Disclaimer: I'm not a professional kite self-launcher or self-lander and I don't play one on TV. Self-launching and self-landing can be a dicey move, particularly in gusty conditions and should only be practiced by those who understand the potential penalties in bodily well-being, ego and pride. Any information provided in said "clinic" is purely sharing of information and experiences on a friend-to-friend basis. No money has or will be collected.

If you're interested in joining the fray, comment below so we'll have an idea of how many to expect (and how big a space we'll need).

Phil? Vincent?

I'm game Kirk.
What do you think, people joining the clinic should bring their own equipment and their smallest kite so they don't get yanked? Or do we teach on one kite at a time to avoid mayhem?
I think in front of the beach chalet is great: you can teach tether launching and landing at the fire pits and hot launch/self launch upwind.
