Anyway, I then went for a walk down to the mall and back to get some fresh air while traffic died down. Walking back I passed two gents walking a dog, and I didn't catch all of the conversation, but it sounded like they were talking about wanting to get rid of kiting there! They said something about getting close to achieving their goal before, and some sign "down there" that they wanted to take down (is there a kiting rules sign posted?), and they mentioned the shop (which led me to believe they were talking about Jane & Rebecca's), but I could not walk slow enough to eavesdrop (they were larger fellows and I think it was a German Shepherd stopping often to sniff). Sooo.... PURE speculation but it led me to believe some of the people that live there think it's a danger or an inconvenience. I know several of you readers are local so maybe you've heard neighbors speak up before - on the other hand it could be purely my imagination what I heard.

Either way I was in that area Sunday but too hung over to kite (girlfriend's birthday) and I heard it was great. Dammit!! Alameda never blows when I'm there!
I'm afraid you heard correct-
Crown/kiters has been in the crosshairs of "The Old Guard" several times before... There is a small number of major trouble makers in Alameda business/politics, basicly it's a tough place to due business-
The truth is Alameda could be shut down in a heart beat by a few of these #$%^ people.

Me- I just dont like the fact that the kiters are using up the whole beach, placing the public (kids) in harms way.

Kiting is better then that, WE are better then that!

if they start shutting down beaches here for kiting, I will finally have a real reason to move to Maui ! (or live in an RV in sherman lol)

There's a big thread somewhere on here about a little girl at Alameda that got injured by a kiter, she got her face cut up pretty bad and ended up with a nasty scar. I had read that entire thread before going to Alameda, and when I got there there were two families picnicking right in the launch area. I think it's inevitable that there are going to be more injuries to innocent people with the kind of flying I saw in just the few hours I was there. Also noticed quite a few people walking their flying kites back up the beach, something that if tried at 3rd Ave you would get yelled at immediately.

Aloha,
I just moved to Alameda from the east coast and am really enjoying the easy access to some great kiting. Yes, some of the mayhem with all the newbies has scared me on the weekends, but I guess that comes with the territory.

You mentioned a place called "Max's Landing" - what/where is that?

Hope to see you out there.
Later

Rico... Max's Landing / Max's Beach / Lower Beach is the kite beach down by Shellgate (the road off Shoreline Drive) just downwind of the shack. Super friendly and a lot of welcoming locals. See you down there!
