Well, there are no "rules".....most people use some wax to prevent slippage. I also use booties which help with traction. You learn how to stand a bit more upright compared to when you ride with straps, and you just over time figure it out. When it comes to white water, you try to pre-absorb the energy by bending your legs/hips - to the extent you are able to do it......
A good idea before you go into the ocean is to try a more mellow bay spot that has some chop.
Try it, you will have a lot of fun learning a fun new skill that will open up a new world of fun for you.
Get some, Z.

Calling you out!

I like your attitude! Now when are you going to come down and catch some waves instead of building up that Arnold six-pack doing flatwater tabletop jumps on every tack ;-). Hint: The last real swell of the season is this weekend.
Cheers,
Gideon

I'm just not ready to drive to the coast 100 times before the regulars will allow me to be in the waves.gideonlow wrote:Sonny,Sonny wrote:remove the straps

Waddell's reputation for localism far exceeds the reality. Sure, if you're not an advanced rider and don't know how to thread your way through tight situations, then it is best to ride a little downwind of the break that's directly in front of the launch area. There's heaps of downwind space where nobody bothers you anyway. As a competent rider (or in your case, 5th degree black belt), the worst that will happen is that you might get snaked on some waves until your face is familiar. Most of the guys are really cool and appreciate new riders that can rip it up.
They even tolerated me shoving my way into the line-up right when I moved here, and that's saying something as I'm as stubborn as a mule (or at least my wife would tell you that :-).
If you want to come down PM me and we can meet-up.
Cheers,
Gideon

mrafalek,
Wave board: Surftech Stretch Quad, 5'11". Can be bought at Kite Wind Surf. I've got one and love it. Yes, it's been warrantied already because of a manufacturing defect, however Surftech let me take a replacement board while I wait. Can't beat that! Quad fin great for kiting and the Stretch is still loose enough on the waves. Anywhere from 5'6" to 6'0" should do you just fine. You're welcome to try it out at Waddell this weekend, or anywhere else you may run across me... will probably be at the coast this weekend.

There are 3 boards I am super stoked about this year:
- Underground Freewave
- RRD Pro Wave 5 9"
- Slingshot SRT 5 11"
Each one of them is different but all 3 rock on the waves.
Come by and Sonny will walk you through all the surf boards we got:
- RRD
- Underground
- Slingshot
- Jimmy Lewis
- Surftech
- Naish
- Litewave
And the mutands Brunotti BumbleBee and RRD Toxic Wave and twin tip Wave RRD Venom.
All of the above are in stock right now.
I am going with the Freewave due to the flex and the Toxic Wave for the surfy feel and no need to jibe convenience...
