mind your own business and stay out of it
OR
you better be attentive and shut down people doing things that threaten our kiting beach access

I was the kiter with the Blue Kite, AKA the third/last kiter. I am a little tired of my picture online with the accusation of endangering the public, so I would like to clarify a few things.
1. I was well aware of the rules prior to setting up the lines
2. The ranger and I were talking about how to approach the kiter in the swim zone, and he and I agreed that I was launching correctly. We talked for some time and heís actually a really nice guy. He and I made sure the launch radius was clear prior to launching.
3. I body drag from shore on onshore winds: I find it to be safer than riding the board from land, and I never entered the swim zone. I will take the term ìrippingî as a compliment.
4. I landed downwind from the only two waders in the area, and igoingtofly / SNix actually waved me closer to the waders, which truthfully made me a little uncomfortable.
To add onto the situation that Boardsports has helped to clarify, please check your facts prior to making accusations. I am not going to monitor this forum, as I donít think it is productive. This is not a defense, as I see nothing that needs defending. However, I agree with average_male that confrontation is a must, and I am always reachable at tanker223@gmail.com, or feel free to approach me at the beach. I have the grey UltraNectar pants with the red stripe. I am a strong advocate and active supporter of kiter access and safety in the Bay Area, and I am always happy to talk.

I had just launched from the from the power towers. I saw 1st kite go up from the swimming area and start to body drag out then the 2nd went up as I raced down to tell them not to go through there. I tacked upwind outside the swim zone to tell the other one the same thing and noticed he did not have a board but #2 had an extra in his arms Looked like some kind of a lesson, Bs school or friend teaching friend I don't know, but when #2 got to me he said "it will not happen again" and "DON'T put us in danger" like he did the 100's of beach goers this vary warm Sunday.
Joey do you really think it is a good idea to sensationalize the danger in this situation. Yes kiting through a swim area is bad news, but there are many places, in fact most places, where a designated kiting launch is not possible. In these cases kites flying over the heads of swimmers and beach goers is the norm. Statements like "putting 100's of beach goers in danger" just by flying a kite over their heads, are the kind that are going to get kiting banned. Yes, a kite is a powerful and at times dangerous object, but tone down the rhetoric, ok.

dpca, you clearly have never kited at Coyote Pt. There are very strict rules about entering the swimming zone. These rules were originally placed to prevent windsurfer/swimmer accidents 15 years before kiting was even invented.
The beach area at Coyote is limited, and because of upwind obstructions the windy is shifty and gusty the closer you get to land. Exactly the situation where any kiter poses a threat to other beach users. I don't care how much experience you have; shifty & gusty wind means you don't have 100% control of your kite.
The original post was neither exagerated nor rhetoric. There are only a few people who kite Coyote regularly. Igoing2fly clearly knows the ropes at Coyote. It can be a fun break from the crowds at other launches if you know what you're doing and go at the right tide. By not launching on the upwind beach near the powerlines, you are breaking the local rules, putting other beach users in danger and threatening access.
As for the blue kite guy and his defense, you should know better. Just because a lifeguard says it's okay, doesn't mean it's safe. I've had discussions with many water safety people over the years. Unless they are kiters, they really don't know the dangers a kite poses. If you're showing up at a new spot, you need to talk to other kiters who know the local rules and hazards, then follow their advice. Nobody who's kited a Coyote more than a couple of times would recommend a launch at the Boardsports shack followed by a run out through the swimming zone.

Tanker,
Thanks for coming out and sharing your side of the story, always nice to get input and perspective from all parties.
Seems now that dialog has started, we are all on the right track to making things safer for everyone.
And regarding that last comment about kiting pants from grumpy, funny? hell yea,.. but I think it takes away from the seriousness of the topic at hand...
