Any suggestions on a carrying device?
Which radio has the longest effective range?

I have a Icom ic-m72 submersible from west marine in Sausilito. It's fairly small and I clip it inside the belt of my impact vest. I have it tied to the vest with a bit of spectra because I don't think it really floats.

haven't had to use it yet, but it's nice to have (until I crashed hard and it whipped around on it's line)

Anyone know where to pick up a chest mounted holder like you see the ski patrol with up in the mountains?

i justified the best handheld at West because I have a boat (Icom M72). small powerful waterproof and good batteries. the sales rep said his works better than the fixed VHF on his boat (but he's a sales rep).

when kiting, just drop it in the front of your wetsuit like everyone else. you forget it's there.

sflinux, you planning a downwinder to WC?

Downwinder to Waddell would be pretty amazing. Like 60 miles from OB?

cheap solution

Post by flippersurf » Wed Mar 19, 2008 6:04 pm

Since there's mobile reception all across the main windsurf/kite area at Crissy Fields, I simply spent $10 on a waterproof case (West Marin) for my cell. The coast guard is programmed on speed-dial. Not 'textbook', but hey, it works perfectly (i.e. once called the coast guard for someone stuck right under the bridge)! You don't have to take the phone out of the pack to make the call (so no risk of dropping it in the water)

Other advice: always go out with a friend and keep an eye on each other.

I threw down for a waterproof Radio - was around $150 but is high quality. I also just purchased a holster to hold the radio. It was $30 and here's the site http://www.holsterguy.com/

I'm going to look a bit like a kook with a helmet, impact vest, and holster w/radio - but safety first... Holding off on the fins and flares though.
