And so was Jim Drake, no matter what Hoyle Schweitzer said!
(WARNING: poleboarding reference-- only for serious students of windsport history.)
Bonus question: In what year did "Windsurfer" (the manufacturer) have an injunction against other international manufacturers prohibiting them from selling their windsurfing gear in the US?
:-k

Interesting question to which I have no reply..
HUMmm..
Isnt that kinda like to getting the goverment to back your monopoly?? That sounds unlawfull in the United States, seems more Bahaman then American..
I started sailboarding in the bay around 81' but quikly feel out of it again after moving back to wind-less So'Cal...
YEARS LATER while speaking to Robbie Naish about his, "sailboarding" he said: "where do you come from??", my responce was WHAT?! He said ,"no-one calls it sailboarding anymore" to which I replyed, "what do you call it now-a-days?". WINDSURFING!, he retorted.
He must have thought I'd just rolled in from Kansas as I responded "that's weird, WindSurfer was a brand name when I used to sailboard".
SO!, What year did "Windsurfer', brand" the sport of sailboarding?

That would be 1973, the year they trademarked the brand name "Windsurfer".
Robbie was sponsored by them as a kid, long before there was a Naish brand-name of course! Although his dad was shaping, probably shortly thereafter. Maybe that's why he questioned you? Little whipper-snapper. You ever see those photos of him as a kid riding the original teak booms and displacement hulls in the waves?
I think he prefers his Naish "Fish" kiteboard for those Kailua conditions!

Windsurfer International, a company Hoyle Schweitzer and Jim Drake established on the basis of a patent granted to them in 1970 for a "wind-propelled apparatus.
Jim Drake's and Hoyle Schweitzer's patent for a sailboard was granted in 1970 (filed 1968 - reissued 1983).
Schweitzer bought out Drake's share in 1973
In the late 1970's, Mistral, a Swiss manufacturer was sued by Windsurfer International in Germany.
So I guess it is ine the late 70's
Big Dave, don't I get some points for coming up with all this useless trivia?
I did find it very interesting to learn about Newman Darby and the fact that it appears he was the actual inventor of the Windsurfer, and I thought it was Jim all along....
I say the answer to your question is 1978
