I'm looking forward to the new Type 8's and new bars. The bars have always worked well, but the sheeting lines and fifth line leaders on the Type Wave bars were items that needed replacement on a regular basis as they would simply wear and eventually break. In my book, if the kites rock, that's not a major issue, but a minor annoyance. That and the lack of a true spinning bar setup, but these appear to be fixed in the '07 line of products.

Haven't tried the type wave, but the type7 is so forgiving I feel like I can try stuff and keep my ribs intact when I blow it. (I'm intermediate, yadda yadda) Really good guys also use this kite, yet I feel comfortable reccomending it to beginners as their first kite.many of the RRD kites seem to be so fast moving that they potentially would slow the learning curve for anyone except an expert kiter. When you get spanked on an RRD kite, it hurts! Adding a TDB helps, but it doesn't change the nature of the kites.
I also have an HIR 16, and LOVE that kite. while the HIR is more aggressive (pulls harder, jumps higher), I wouldn't let that kite speak for the whole line. Basically, they had 3 kites (4 if you count the school kite) with very distinct flying characteristics in their respective categories.

Evan,
Thanks for the detailed post. I'm in a quandry since everything I ride that's brand new for '07 new seems suited to different styles (than mine). I can't imagine giving up the boost of the current/past RRD C-kites and better try these Hyper-Types when they arrive. I've ridden several new 2007 designs (all considered best of breed) and am left wanting more juice, more power, more boost, more throttle response.
I guess I'll wait on passing judgement on all bow/hybrid designs for another week? I held off on new kites this summer but eventually will need to step up and re-quiver. Any times you're Delta-bound with the demo fleet? Look me up if you wouldn't mind. Also, who is this guy Nick from Wisconsin?

I'll tell you that I love my TDB bar with the HiR's. Huge depower with real pull (not the soft pull like a SLE) which I like, and I could take my hands off the bar no problem. I'm thinking of keeping these kites for next year too.
PS has anyone tried to use q line as a replacement for the active 5th?

Bob, I didn't mention any names, but I guess you guessed who I was talking about. :)
BTW, I think the TDB was a brilliant concept and I'm sure I would have gotten killed riding the TW without it. I haven't ridden the Type 7, it's just interesting to me talking to intermediate kiters about the kites they are riding this year and what they skills they have gained. At least two of them described the Type 7 and HIR as "scary fast", and were going to try the TDB to take some of the edge off.
There's no arguing that the kites are high performance; all you need to do is watch Chip, Ollie, Bob, etc.

There are many photos of the kite showing close-ups of the details.
We will have the Hypertypes in the local beaches for the weekend.
