Good news after years of trying to get it done we now have a sensor (albeit virtual) at Toll Plaza Beach. Thanks to George from wind alert for getting this new Nowcast sensor up and running. To view the realtime click on the view graph link at the sensor location in wind alert.

I'm able to click anywhere on the map to get a nowcast info at that location. Is there a reason a specific point was setup?

If it's "virtual" what does it mean? Is it an amalgamation of nearby sensors? A best guess?

It's using the NowCast technology, meaning a combination of nearby sensor data and topological weather modeling.

I ordered an anemometer so I will be able to check how accurate all that info is. Though, based on Jane's and Boardsport's facebook posts, the wind at alameda is consistently 4-8mph higher than the steady wind recorded/shown from NowCast (at the Alameda launch spot & in the water off the beach) and USS Hortnet station.

What I noticed is that although you can monitor any spot using NowCast via computer/browser, you cannot do the same with iKitesurf mobile app, therefor the Virtual Station does help if you are on mobile.

If you get the windalert app you can touch anywhere on the map, stick a pin in it, hit "i" to get more details and the nowcast number will appear.

I've noticed that nowcast is at least directionally good enough information to know what to pump and if something is rideable

Enjoy!

Hey- I see there are a lot of $20 off ikitesurf/windalert memberships. Is that a first time member only discount? Or is there a process to keep renewing with the various reference links for $20 off? (simply renew and pay, or cancel membership and recreate from scratch?)

Invaluable service, but I'd still like to be able to save $20 if possible.
