Gotta hand it to him, it's very rational! *(Stefaans wrote:I do everything wrong there sounds like.
Here's the deal. I only kite there after work so show up late. i jump in my suit and run down with my gear. once pumped up right at the wall i get a quick launch and run out and kite leaving my pump bag etc on the beach come in land and that's that.
Why do I do this? Well issue is there is always somebody at the parking lot to launch or land you. If you go all the way to the waters edge you need to self launch and land and honestly the way the winds been blowing i'll take my chances at the wall with a safe launch from somebody in the parking lot. gives me a chance to inspect my rigging before you give the thumbs up. same thing with landing. i'll rather land my kite into somebody's hands 5 feet of the wall than trying to put it down in 30knts at waters edge. Yes I know how to self launch and land but just don't like it.
No real argument here just trying to explain my reasoning.

Re: Launching Etiquette @Ocean Beach
Launching far enough away from the wall that if you blow your release the kite still doesn't reach the wall even if it ends up downwind of you takes very little marginal effort in terms of walk to make work (it's just a bit more than a bar's line length the distance vs. someone launching/landing RIGHT UP against the wall)
And the marginal risk reduction to endangering community access is huge - Thanks in advance for keeping it bro out there

Re: Launching Etiquette @Ocean Beach
I have to say, I have self-launched (and landed) close to the wall at OB and felt sorta dumb for doing it. Def safer to haul a bit closer to the shore, away from the wall, and/or have someone launch you. I watched some dumbass self-land the other day after he climbed up on the seawall with his kite in the air, winging it around near the lampposts and then dumped it - very competently - in the dead air under the seawall. Looked impressive, but anything goes wrong and it's a pizza party.
So. I will make a point of launching a bit farther from the wall, especially self-launching. Landing I don't really see mucho problemo. PArty on.

Nope not that guy. but if i see a Naish kite coming over the wall i will most likely catch it.
Pretty damn stupid thing to do btw. backwind ruins your kite against the wall and lines get snagged and cut on the wall so just setting yourself up for a bad time couple sessions later.
