I only rinse my gear when I know I won't use it for more than a week. Such as during winter in between storm kiting or before a trip

Only ever rinse when at Kanaha. They have heavy duty fresh water showers there.

Re: What's your takedown routine?
I rinse everything except the kite. The tag on my O'Neill wetsuit says it will last longer if rinsed so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. My condo complex has a pool with an outdoor shower, so I just take my bin of wet stuff over to the shower, then hang it on a rack in my bathtub or on my balcony. There have been times when I dried my stuff without rinsing, but there is almost inevitably some sandiness and I've gotten spoiled by that fresh, bay-funk-and-sand-free feeling so I try to rinse always. But hey, different strokes for different folks ...

I've never rinsed my kites (bay+ocean) and I am still riding a 2007 quiver, no issues (me thinks many of the prev posters get new quivers every 2 years, so just trying to add some legitimacy to not needing to rinse).
I only rinse the wetsuit when it begins to smell like a skunk in my van.

get a solar shower at Rei and a plastic bin. you carry the solar shower and your wetsuit in the bin. When you get off the water:
You stand in the bin, peel off the wetsuit and wash yourself with the shower. hang wetsuit over side mirror. put on clothes. throw the solar shower into the bin, the wetsuit on top and put it in your truck/van/car or if you are sanders drap it over your bicycle.
super bonus points if you throw dishwashing liquid into the loop. I've upgraded to real body wash soap but used palmolive last year...
Don't clean stuff, it only gets dirty. Doesn't anyone remember the second law of thermodynamics?

adamrod wrote:i've been kiting for well over a decade and i never do anything in your "at home" category. (i also live in an sf apartment).
i don't rinse anything. after kiting, wet or dry, it goes in the thule box...ready for next session. the wet wetsuit dries in the box over the course of the day.
i've never had a problem with things wearing out or falling apart due to lack of rinsing.
there! i just saved you 30 min!
I fully agree with that routine.. I throw everything into my car wet and ridden hard... then next day pull it out and do the same... Kiting that is :)
Never had any problems!

1. Land kite, leave board near shore for rinse if desired
2. Wind up lines unhook
3. Deflate pack kite
4. Shoulder kite pack, pick up board near shore rinse bar and or board if sandy
(walk to car)
5. Strip off everything and dump in plastic tub.
Get a towel hoodie. It saves at least 5 minutes changing.
Agree with others - takes me about 15-20 minutes not including the hike at 3rd.
Also I sometimes flip flop step 5 and 4 if at a location such as Crissy or OB where shore is nearby that way I can deflate kite in street/warm clothes.
Setup is opposite and only takes slightly longer due to pumping.
At home - just like Adam/Ollie - hang up wet stuff on bar/hooks in garage and that's it.

Rinse? What is this word you speak of? I pretty much follow Ollie's protocol. In the summer I don't even hang things.
I like to BS about all the cool tricks I can't do though so it takes me about 40mins or more to get that out of my system.

+1 for the towel hoody. Keeps the awkwardness of peeling off the wetsuit to a minimum and saves you from accidentally flashing your junk.
No rinsing here either.
