How about a Blade Trigger? I've got a 2010 9m and 12m and LOVE 'em.
Both have great boost, quick kite steering speed, high end wind range, and superb stability. And you'll probably find them for less $$ than OR, RRD or North.

Good question. I rode the 10M for about 45 minutes and loved how it turned -very direct and fluid and fast. Did not have a 12M to demo and since it's the first year of the kite there is no copy on it's low wind characteristics, which are important to me as my 12m is my biggest kite. It's also not available as a closeout and the new ones are not cheap so it felt a little risky after such a short short demo.adamrod wrote:wait, so, if you tried a Cypher and liked it...why is it not on your list?

OR kites are known very well for their low end so would not let that be a worry.

I demoed the 2012 10m Trigger and that is an insanely powerful kite. I think I may have had bad trimming because it seemed prone to backstalling, but man did it have grunt. In 26mph on the 10m I was having trouble holding it down. I did like it, just didnt feel like I got enough of a sense of it in variable conditions to make an informed opinion.kitecrazy wrote:How about a Blade Trigger? Give them all a try, I would suggest demoing the new 2012 RRD Obsession.
See you on the water.

They don't normally have any backstalling issues at all.
9m Trigger totally fun. Boosts HUGE!

Re: OR Rise VS RRD Obsession VS North Evo
the rise is a bit slower than the cypher, but it has more range. The depower on the 12 is huge. I don't know how the relaunch compared to others, but it seems fine.
I am 190lbs and have had OR 10m kites (Rise, Razor, Cypher) as my biggest kite with a surfboard, but I don't kite Alameda or other light spots. The 12 will get you through most anything.
There is a 12 Cypher too, but range won't be as good.

Re: OR Rise VS RRD Obsession VS North Evo
I only know the rise, so some feedback on that.
First, its not so flat. It looks rounder from the kiter's point of view than the other bridled kites I had before, except maybe the ION which is basically a C kite.
Excellent range, both top and low end. Close low end to the crossbow, which is very good low end. If that kite makes more power per size it may be due to other factors than projected area, like profile shape etc. The Rise is pretty unique wing. The vents mean the kite stalls later, so it can fly in higher angle of attack, maybe that explains the low end.
Best features of this kite from my point of view is fast turning and light bar. You can trash the kite right and left one handed like it's no one's business. Fast turning usually means strong up pull, this kite will shoot you up like a bunny and redirect to landing exactly when you want without too much planning ahead (unlike slower high aspect kites).
Some other cool feature is that it does not back stall easily even when you hack the bar and trim. That's probably more important for beginners.
Built very well, lots of reinforcements and patches on the canopy and tubes.
I heard good things about the blade kites. Currently I am happy with the rise and not planning to upgrade unless I destroy it somehow.
