Check your gear before you wreck your gear!

I was out at 3rd ave. on Saturday after I drove out to Half Moon Bay to find no wind and fog. No worries though, still had plenty to do in Half Moon bay. Anyway I was heading out at 3rd ave nicely powered. Nice sunny day and as I turned around to tack back towards the beach I snapped my chicken loop. Kite tottally depowered and in the channel heading for the bridge. Luckily I was able to use the fifth line to pull the depower strap towards myself and tie what was left of it onto my harness hook. Then I managed to relaunch the kite but had no fixed chicken loop. Just the bar and the front lines hooked to my harness hook. A bit awkward to say the least. Surprisingly I was able to ride back to the lower beach at third. Which sucked because it was low tide and muddy but I made it with kite, board and bar and lines. Just a bit muddy. I sure am glad it was not windy at Half Moon Bay that day. Broken bar and waves would have been ugly! Moral of the story. Check your gear for any wear. A new chicken loop was only $25. New kite would have been 1200 and new board 700. Not good!!
