Soo you want to learn to foilboard?

Post by Loscocco » Mon Nov 04, 2013 1:26 pm

Hilarious video by Gabe on his first attempt to ride a Spots Foil.
About 45 minutes worth of riding cut down to 4 mins of epic crashes.

What is going on at 2:20? Is that just a regular wipeout or something else?

I have a carafino foil, which I haven't got around to using. In a doldrum here, no wind or waves, finally dragged it out, for training session behind the boat. It took 2 sessions (several hours) to get able to confidently ride it without wipeouts. But, still have the constant pogo'ing....it is way harder than it looks.

I am committed to learning it, will be fun once dialed. There's certainly an investment of time and energy needed though.

YES! Great to be at the start of the learning curve again, eh? It sure is! You get better every time you try. Finding that position directly above that lifting force underneath you requires time to adjust. Your body learns where/how to position itself, your stance structure tightens up, you react quicker…stick with it and it'll come. Way to charge!

Awesome video, thanks. What a kook! But seriously, it looks pretty hard and has a learning curve for sure! I'm with Sloughslut on this one...

It looks like getting past the first wipe out, where the foil tries to decapitate him, is the hardest part. Survive that and you're in with a chance! :)

If foil mastery is 10, then I am at point 3 on the scale.

Stage 1 involves getting up on the thing and not immediately having it scoot out from under you. Two scary things at that stage: one, the mast is sharp and it comes at you from all sorts of unexpected angles; two, if you fall toeside with no speed, you may not come out of straps and have an unpleasant sensation that you may snap your ankles.

Stage 2 is you're up and going, but no control over up and down and can't turn at all to the side without immediate wipeout.

Stage 3: you can get up with confidence, steer it side to side, some control over getting onto foil, but can't maintain it. Fun thing at this stage: turning sharp for sudden increase in speed, so you get up on foil with some push against it. Actually feels like you know what you're doing for a brief moment.

And that's as far as I've gotten. But that's behind a boat, which has the advantage of steady pull, but maybe a disadvantage of pulling more laterally than vertically. I dunno. Harder than I thought, but seems learning curve will be steep and short.

I've been thinking about making one too. Lots of discussion here:

Not all of it useful...
