Cycling went through the same awkward phase where everyone realized helmets were a good idea and started doing it voluntarily to set a good example in the community, but all the pros refused to wear them because of the image thing.
Nowadays you assume anyone out cycling on the road without a helmet is inexperienced and you'd feel nervous if they jumped onto your paceline.
