Explain line length please

Post by Jamo04AT » Mon Sep 02, 2013 5:20 am

Why are some lines longer then others? Why are the lines adjustable ? I'm geussing it's a power depower thing? If so, shorter is more power longer is less power? Thanks in advance :)

Shorter is faster and less power. You have to move the kite to make power. Think small motor big revs.

Longer is slower and more power. And more jump hang time. Think big motor less revs.

Unless you mean front line line length vs back line line length that's angle of attack and is related to your bar position and trim settings.

by moving the bar, you adjust the relative length of the lines. by pushing the bar away from you, you are making the front lines shorter than the rear lines (relatively). This causes the angle of attack of the kite to change, making it catch less wind, making it less powerful.

max power is all lines equal length.

The "Barfinder" section of the this page does a reasonable job of explaining differences in line lengths: http://www.northkites.com/products/bars/5th-element/

I think most modern day line sets are 20 meters. Years ago they came standard at 29 meters and have slowly been getting shorter and shorter... keep in mind that the kites have been getting more and more powerful during the same time period. I like the 20m lines and small bar, wouldn't go smaller or larger.
