Possible new kite spot? Middle Harbor Shoreline park

Post by reyrivera » Sat Jul 20, 2013 6:08 pm

In one of the old episodes of Mythbusters a few years ago, I saw a bright colored C kite flying in the background. I assumed that person launched at Middle Harbor Shoreline park. I wanted to fly there as well, but my concern back then was the Alameda Naval Air Station runway is still being used and that area is a no fly zone.

Does anyone know that is still the case? In the late summer season when Alameda is not kiteable, I can see that the Port of Oakland wind sensor can be windy enough to fly a 10 meter kite.

I guess i will just have to fly a kite there and see if I get stopped by park rangers.

Anyway, I snapped photos today. I was going to try and launch, but my back was acting up a little bit today.

The launch area has hazards, so its a potential advanced spot. The area is right where the port of oakland sensor is located.

It is an amaizing flat water spot. I checked it out myslef but never launched from there...the beach is disgusting. I know some folks who had a session there and had a blast.

Ha, the kite in the background wasn't someone kite surfing. It was the early days of Makani Power prototyping :)
I'm not sure there are park rangers there. At least not in the usual sense. Be careful of what you leave in your car though.

Rey, Scouted this spot 4 years ago. The park was designed as a community beach access but access to the water was closed off shortly after the park opened and the entire area is now a protected wildlife/bird refuge. Rangers will give you a hassle if they catch you in or near the water. I have spoken to them about this and they patrol regularly as their office is on site. If you are thinking about a sneak session then try launching off the stairs by the old beach area but at high tide. Low tide is a mess and very slippery. You would be better off kiting behind Encinal HS in Alameda with that awesome breakwater spit, just watch out for the barbed wire fence downwind of the launch. Good luck.

I did not realize how much I miss the coast so much ... clean open water ... 7 meter go to kite ... 9 meter light wind kite ... only have to worry about really are those pesky dolphins...
