There are a few skills Gatewood recommends a beginning kiteboarder possess before signing up for lessons. “If you can swim, that’s a good thing,” said Gatewood. “It’s a good skill to have. A person with a basic understanding of sailing will have an easier time than someone who has never sailed.”

Advertising on groupon or local news media, what's the difference?

Maybe you need the ability to read as well as swim.....?

Haha, funny as an instructor you feel a little like a hypocrit responding to this thread. But I've personaly watched the sport grow over the last 10 years. And seeing the it go from crazy to crazier, many go same spots getting over crowded with the theory of safety in numbers going down hill. Now I mostly kite where no one goes, its like the motorcycle rider theory "its not you its the other guy you gotta watch out for". I have no idea how many kiters, but I know some of the best ones were the ones I taught. Be safe have fun, and please drop the attitude, we don't need it! Peace out~

And back on topic: There are 3423 members of this forum. I bet anyone with access to the webcam resources can get some stats on monthly unique visitors and such. Though at some locations these are used by windsurfers also, you could probably estimate population of active kiteboarders to within ~500 or so. My guess is that its around 2000-2500

I see around 10-25 kiters in the East Bay sites of Berkeley, Toll Plaza, Racetrack and Marina Bay. Using the hockey stick approach, a small number of kiters have the highest frequency of time on water, so maybe 4 - 5 times this many kiters are in East Bay, say 150 being generous. Add another 150 for Alameda, 300 for 3rd and 200 for Sherman. I'd give it 800 plus or minus 400

Put your glasses (back) on John - it says "Grandma", not "Grandpa"!
