Kiting destinations during July

Post by Cali_Rider » Mon May 13, 2013 10:46 am

Hey guys,

I am heading back to graduate school in the fall and am planning to take the month of July off from work before heading back.

I want to travel and am thinking about making it a kiting trip. What places would you go to during the month of July? The trip will probably be somewhere between 3-4 weeks and hopefully include at least 2 different locations.

All thoughts and suggestions welcome!

-Peter

I knew someone would say this... :)

And I agree, but I am lucky enough to be able to kite 4-5 days/week in the bay area - so i'll get my fix between now and July-. And since I am planning on traveling anyway, I was hoping to incorporate kiting into my trip.

Some buds and I have the following central coast trip on deck for this weekend, surfing & kiting depending on wind / waves:

Drive LA Thurs PM

Fri AM: Santa Monica/Malibu
Fri PM: County Line
Drive: Santa Barbara

Sat AM: Jalama
Sat PM: C-Street
Drive: Pismo/Grover

Sun AM: Arroyo Laguna
Sun PM: Pismo
Drive: Back to SF

We will let you know how it goes & if I recommend the itinerary for a repeat on a 3-4 day segment of your time off - If it ends up being really fun I'm down to do it again in July XZSD

Also for our trip this weekend anyone is welcome to come along but we are full for transpo so need to add cars for any additional heads... Make sure you have a 5 or 6m :] Ciaoo!

If you mainly kite in the Bay, then a vacation to Sherman Island may be ideal.
Hood River/The Gorge would be a good choice in July. Maui too.
The BC/Vancouver area has some epic kite spots and Vancouver is an awesome city.
I've heard Eagle Lake is a fun spot to kite. I'm hoping to check it out this season...

+1 for upper Northern CA to Oregon Coast and Gorge.

Hands down one of the best trips I've made during summer. Fireworks on July 4 in Hood River, a must see.

On the way up, down or both, 101 North, kite Clam Beach, Pistol River, then Floras Lake, make your way up to Waldport and Newport, then Hwy 20 to Corvalis/I-5

You can camp a few days at Tucker Park in Hood River, then splurge for the last couple nights at the Best Western Hood River for the 7/4 holiday (make reservations now, it fills up).

question is, what kind of kiting do you want to do?

Waves or flat water? Super strong winds or lighter super steady winds? Warm or cold?

100% maui. Besides theres plenty of other things to do from sun up to sundown. Be ready for a $800 airfare round trip this time of year. 20-25 knots from 11 am to 6 pm like clockwork.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

I guess I should have said that I include Sherman in my bay area kiting. Usually less frequent, but I make it to sherman when time allows.

As far as the type of kiting... kiting flat water in boardshorts sounds like the ultimate kiting experience for me. So something in a warm setting, where a wetsuit isn't required would be sweet.

I will be going to school in Washington, so I plan to take a few extra days on my way up and hit up the northern spots you guys mentioned above.

what about kiting spots outside the country?
