Anyone out there hang glide?

Post by sfbaysmells » Mon May 06, 2013 12:04 pm

Hang gliding has been on my mind forever. If you're willing to give some introductory advice and share the stoke i would love to pick your brain about it.

Thanks,
Brandon

Would you consider paragliding instead of hang gliding? Less gear, more fun.
PM me if interested and I can put you in touch with an instructor etc.

Paragliding is definitely the way to go IMHO. There are quite a number of kiters / pilots on this forum, and the Bay Area is a great place to do both sports. There are many days in spring/summer where you can do both in the same day - fly at the coast, and then hit 3rd when the thermal wind kicks in!

Each sport is great in its own way and they complement each other a little bit in terms of understanding the wind and weather conditions, but the skill set is actually quite different. Kiting is much faster and more of an adrenaline rush, paragliding can be calm and peaceful at the coast, or intense and adrenaline inducing when you're working big thermals in the mountains and getting really high.

Kiting is generally a much better workout, unless you are hiking and flying, which is really good exercise.

I was learning hang gliding before I took lessons for kiting. Dropped it instantly.

The gear requirements are insane. Unless you fancy having a beat up pickup truck with a modified top rack to carry 10ft+ poles you will not be into it.

Paragliding seems to be much more inline with kiter mentality and tolerance for gear size.

Alright. Y'all succeeded in dissuading me from HGing. Hiking in opens up way more possibilities. Seems like hang gliding is a FULL time thing. I have one. Kiting.
