Hey Pismo area kiters.....

Post by sc-surfer » Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:59 pm

Looking at the forecast for the weekend and it isn't much. Maxing out at 10-12 Fri-Sun.
Is this a good forecast or are there micro climates that improve on the forecasted wind. (Like up here at Wadell where the fog bank is good for a boost over the forecast)

Just tryin' to get my head around weather or not it's worth the drive down.

Thanks

Dunno how accurate this is, but The Kiteboarder Mag has this on their front page today:

http://www.thekiteboarder.com/2013/04/s ... -and-beer/

"FORECAST: Persistently strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) northwesterly winds will produce night and morning low clouds, fog and cooler coastal temperatures Thursday and continuing through the weekend with an 8- to 10-foot northwesterly sea and swell (with a 7- to 14-second period) forecasted along our coastline. Thank you wind gods!"

not sure what forecast you are looking at but we use combo of NOAA and Diablo Nuclear Power Plant weather guy for best forecasting.... if there is NW wind in forecast and if temps stay below 75 at coast and 85 inland, typically we will get the wind 95%! That is why wind is not as consistent in summer here as the spring.....

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS:

A strong Pacific jet stream pushed a fast-moving cold front
southward through San Luis Obispo County at around 3 a.m.
this morning. This cold front delivered increasing clouds
and a few rain showers. It will become mostly clear by
this afternoon.

High pressure will build behind this cold front and produce
moderate gale-force to fresh gale-force (32 to 46 mph)
northwesterly winds later this morning through this afternoon
along the coastline. Wind gusts of over 55 mph may develop
along some of the more exposed beaches.

Rain and snow will spread southward down the Sierra through
this morning. Snow levels will drop to 4,500 feet, although
significant snow accumulations are not expected.

On Tuesday and continuing Wednesday, a pattern of gentle to
moderate (8 to 18 mph) northeasterly (Santa Lucia) winds
will develop during night and morning hours, shifting out
of the northwest and increasing to strong to gale-force
(25 to 38 mph) levels during the afternoon. This pattern
will produce mostly clear skies and warmer temperatures.

Persistently strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) northwesterly
winds will produce night and morning low clouds, fog and
cooler coastal temperatures Thursday and continuing through
the weekend. In other words, the classic Central Coast
springtime northwesterly winds will return. Next week should
be dry with slightly warmer weather by the middle part of
the week.

WINDS:

Today's moderate gale-force to fresh gale-force (32 to 46 mph)
northwesterly winds will develop today. Wind gust may
reach over 55 mph levels along the coastline this afternoon.

These winds will decrease on Tuesday.

A pattern of gentle to moderate (8 to 18 mph) northeasterly
(Santa Lucia) winds will develop during night and morning
hours, shifting out of the northwest and increasing to strong
to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) levels during the afternoon.
This pattern will start on Tuesday night and will continue
through Wednesday.

Persistently strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) northwesterly
winds are forecast on Thursday through Sunday.

I'm a little confused....

Marina's forecast graph looks nothing like the iKite forecast. iKite still calls for sub 20s all weekend. I want to believe the graph at TheKiteboarder.com but....where is that data coming from?

Pretty much standard. If someone just whispers "kite expo" the wind shuts down. Shhhhh...

Shuttles available upwind from Pittsburg and Sherman all summer. Come see what kiting west has to offer.

John Lindsey (the guy who creates the forecast for Diablo that's above) is right about half the time. A lot of times he calls for gales etc. & they never make their way inshore.

Looks like other sites are calling for maxing out at about 11mph Saturday with possibly a very late blow on Sunday. Friday says a whooping 13 mph peak! Hang on to your hatz boyz!!!

I am on my way down now. I'll update with an on-site report when I get there… Probably around 430 or five today (Wednesday).
