Re: Too Many Rats...
Classy, a 62 year old no less...
SANTA CRUZ -- A 62-year-old Pleasure Point surfer was arrested Monday on suspicion of vandalizing the vehicle of a standup paddleboarder.
Donald Warren Darst was arrested after the paddleboarder called 911 Saturday reporting that his vehicle had been vandalized for the third time while parked near 38th Avenue and East Cliff Drive, said deputy April Skalland of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.
After the second vandalism -- which the man suspected was "all related" to some surfers getting territorial and not liking paddleboarders -- he installed a camera on his vehicle, Skalland said.
She declined to outline exactly what the camera caught, but said the vandal's image was clear enough and that the damage Saturday consisted of deep, 6- to 8-inch scratches along one side of the vehicle.
She estimated the damage at $3,000.
Darst was arrested Monday on suspicion of felony vandalism and later booked and released from County Jail. She said she believed Darst was retired; he's still listed on a state bar association website as a licensed attorney. He did not return an email listed under his bar record.
"It's unfortunate that they have to be us-against-them -- this isn't a bunch of juveniles," she said. "And here he is destroying another person's property and making him spend a lot of money to fix it."
The paddleboarder, who lives in Santa Cruz, told deputies he had been parking his car in the same area almost daily to hit the water in the rising sport of standup paddling.

Well, things must still be pretty good here if we haven't left the point where people are committing crimes based on perceived infringement upon their luxury sport stoke
