Dangerous Dog Poop and Unstable Owners.

Post by Tony Soprano » Fri Mar 15, 2013 10:38 am

I just came off the water yesterday and had my new 10 m Kite on the grass and two old fat brown labs walked over to my kite and one lifted his leg to mark my kite, but instead took a shit on it and the turds rolled down the canopy leaving brown streaks on my kite. The owner apologized, picked up the turds and left me with dog shit streaks on my kite.

This could have been avoided if the owner had his dogs on leash.

Two weeks ago a dog walked over a windsurfers sail and was mentioned to the dog owner and the dog owner threatend the windsurfers.

The rigging area is mostly dried up dog shit now with some dirt and grass.Thank You.

Dangerous Dog Poop?

Author: Wiki Pets

Cleaning up after your dog can be a stinky job, but someone's gotta
do it.. Constant clean up is necessary for a healthy environment
for you and your family.

Is Dog Poop Dangerous??

Love, food, and shelter were all things you actively agreed to
providing for your new pet when you purchased or adopted them.
Sanitation and cleanup are also important facets of pet ownership
that are critical to the health and well-being of your entire
family.

Dog feces is as high as 3rd on the list of contributors to
contaminated water. Cleaning up after your dog is one guarantee in
the life of every pet owner. Left un-checked, your yard can quickly
turn into a mine field of feces in a week or less. On average, dogs
do a number two twice per day which adds up to about 14 piles of
poo in just one week, per dog. Contrary to popular belief, dog
feces is not fertilizer and does not provide any benefit to the
soil.

So whats in it?

Dog feces may contain parvovirus, whipworms, hookworms, roundworms,
threadworms, campylobacteriosis, giardia, and coccidia. If left
unattended, these parasites will contaminate the water, soil, and
can even cause infection in both pets and humans (especially
children). The microscopic Hookworm larvae can be passed to another
pet or person directly through the skin or by accidental ingestion
as can other bacteria.

Which parasites can humans acquire?

Yes, humans are capable of contracting hookworms, tapeworms,
threadworms and campylobacteriosis. This is the most significant
reason to avoid allowing dogs (especially puppies) to like your
face and mouth - affectionately known as "puppy kisses". If a dog
has recently eaten feces or attempted to groom their hind quarters
and come into contact with this infectious material, there is a
chance the parasites will be passed directly into your mouth.
Children are especially venerable to infection because they tend to
enjoy playing in the dirt, where parasites such as hookworm larvae
lay dormant waiting for a new host. Young children may also put
dirty hands or toys in their mouth, further increasing the chance
for infectious material consumption.

Disease prevention

Pet feces can be catastrophic to the local water table,
contaminating nearby ponds, lakes, rivers and drinking water. When
feces is allowed to remain on the soil for long periods, rainstorms
will begin to dilute and break apart the feces and slowly spread
the bacteria on other contaminants into local water sources. If
your yard happens to hold water for extended periods of time, the
problem may be amplified.

To avoid potential infection, dog feces should be removed from the
yard every 1 - 7 days, depending on the size of the dog and number
of dogs in the household. Larger dogs will need more frequent
cleanup, as will households with more than 1 dog. A family with one
Pomeranian will have a much lower environmental impact than the
family with 2 Great Danes.

If you are too busy to clean up after your dog, or the thought of
it just makes you gag, there are many services available today,
such as Pet Butler, that will gladly do the dirty work for you. A
sanitation expert will locate and remove any feces found on
premises 1 or more times per week usually from around $10.00. Some
areas do have legal statutes that regulate the cleanup and disposal
of pet waste, so be sure to contact your local health board for
more information.

funny, i was just thinking about this since i found a big 'ol turd on my doorstep again from an inconsiderate dog owner. Apparently the smell of black pepper or citrus work as a repellent.

or you could look at your local pet store.

Dangers of Dog Poop

You may want to vent on a site that caters to dog owners..
All of us know how crappy it feels to step in it, much worse to put your new kite in it.

There are a population of dog owners who lose their minds if even questioned as to their conduct/behavior, let alone contacted by law enforcement. And most of the time it’s not the dog who present the danger, it’s the owners. Oh yeah, then there’s the dogs. Be sure to comment this sping as the DOG nuts will be all over this, we need to rain in these dog nut idiots that are ruining the GGNRA including Crissy Field.
http://www.nps.gov/goga/parkmgmt/dog-management.htm
Crissy Field is not “an area where dogs are allowed to run loose.” Crissy Field is an area open to all, especially to the Park Police supervising it as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Officially Crissy Field is an area where dogs must be ON LEASH, unless they are under VOICE CONTROL.
Voice control means the dog comes when called, not just if it has nothing better to do, not just when it feels like it, but reliably, all the time.

Part of this I wrote last year when I saw a pit bull attacking a police horse, and the police officer was thrown to the ground and rendered unconsious...the dog commminity was blaming the Police officer and Horse.

The mounted police story is pretty nuts. I also feel bad for the horsie. >K($

I think it's important for everyone to know the regulations so we can all calmly remind dog owners of them if we see something happening that could put the rest of the countless recreational users of Crissy Field at risk.

Thanks for posting the piece about the Voice Command Jeff I didn't know that...

Is there anything we can do as a kite community to help suggest change for the better?

Dogs must be on leash in parking lots and picnic areas. Voice control is the beach and promanade.
No dogs in the bathrooms. Most dog people do not know the rules or choose to ignor them.

As for a community effort that is handled by the SFBA, but I invite individual comments to the ggnra when the new DEIS Dog management plan comes out this spring.

As for talking to dog owners it's a crap shoot as to there reaction. Many altercations that never make the news, many dog owner vs dog owner.

http://www.nps.gov/goga/parkmgmt/foia-reading.htm half way down you can read many incidents on the record.

A most sensational incident witnessed by many kite boarders was last summer, when a proffesional dog walker ran another dog owner over with her car, never made the news. This old guy whom is a frquent visitor to crissy with some medium size dogs got in a tiff with the ladys dogs and she picked up some rocks and threw them at him and then grabbed his cell phone away and smashed it to peaces on the ground, then she got in her car and hit im up onto her car's hood and spun him over the side and split. The cops tracked her down and arrested her. it was all caught on video by a tourest. Do not know the outcome and have not seen the old timer back this season so far.
