Have been jonesing to try it ever since I learned that they had one there. I went last night to see if this is a training tool for riding waves. Absolutely yes.
I saw a couple of guys shredding like kelly slater, come to find out they had never been in the ocean. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this.
The riding mechanics are slightly different, but the basic surfing experience/movement is the same. There is a very huge and steep learning curve, and I basically got my ass handed to me. Everyone there was super chill, giving major props for making headway. The "lifeguard" was really helpful getting me up to speed. Even wiping out is fun, as you immediately get launched out the back by the strong force of the water.
I would not go back only cause it is so far away, however if I lived in Sacramento it would be a different story. You spend most of your time standing in line waiting for your turn. An hour is $15, and I got about 6 rides, each lasting about 10 seconds. At that rate I figure a $1000 to get decent and start using this thing to train.
The guys I saw that were good could really shred, and they rode for several minutes, kicking up huge rooster tails of spray. If I was loaded I would most definitely have one in my backyard, this thing is epic, its the waiting around that kinda sucks.

Yes, they reopened recently. I tried it out a couple years ago before the closure. It was fun like you described, but yeah the wait. Maybe there is an off peak time that is less crowded? Maybe get there right when they open? I would do it again, but it is too far a drive for me as well. I will bring my inline skate wrist guards. My wrists were so sore from trying to break my fall repeatedly.

What about a group rental. Own the place for an hour or two? I'd drive up!!

Howdie.
I am thinking a group of us on January 2nd or 3rd at Surf Extreme for 2 hours.
One side of the wave for a group of 15 or the whole thing to ourselves for 30 people.
Anyone interested, give me a shout!
