But more seriously, on south wind, I could imagine you could rig at the peer and work your way upwind?

I'm no santa cruz expert, but couldn't you just launch at cowell's and then kite upwind a bit. I'm assuming it was SE wind. Or isn't there a beach just west of steamer that you could launch.
