I'm in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico on a work trip. Gorgeous, really.
I looked into the forecast before leaving and it looked like bringing gear would have been the biggest waste ever, both in modeled forecasts and that the wind is typically off this time of year.
So guess what. I'm stuck on the beach two consecutive days watching others kite on perfect 12m days with a good bit of swell with my gear 3000 miles away. And no shops here to rent from. Hugely disappointing. (and indicative of the addictive nature of this damn sport in that watching others kite actually gets me down.)
Anyone have friends here down here who could hook me up for an afternoon?

That's why kiting can ruin your life or at least one's ability to enjoy many things and take away all the simple pleasures. Most people would be happy just to be there and enjoy the weather. If you needed to kite so bad, you should have brought your gear. No one's fault but your own. Most of us will never go to Playa Del Carmen for "work".
Look at it as an exercise in getting back to having more balance in life.

There were tons of rental kiosks on the beach in Tulum when I was there a couple of months ago, unfortunately there was no wind or waves.
Have you contacted these guys?: http://www.pdckiteboarding.com/Kite_school.html
good luck.
