Flying to Floras

Post by friggin old guy » Thu Aug 23, 2012 2:52 pm

ok, this is a longshot but I'm going to try it anyway......

I'm trying to make up to Floras the weekend of Sept 8th but can't get the time off for the drive up. I'm wondering if there are any folks out there that fly regularly on the weekends and want to get some kiting in........

What I can offer:

-Free room at Floras Lake B&B
-Great butter kiting on the lake
-Epic downwinder wave spot
-A 50th BD party for the Bradys

There's a giant airstrip right next to the lake that is left over from WWII....they used to launch bombers there for the trip across the Pacific.......nobody there but the airstrip is maintained.

I'm sort of desperate or I wouldn't be begging.

If any interest, please send me a PM and we'll see if we can put it together.

A little over 7 is my personal best, but it's more like 9 hours or even 10 depending on traffic. One RV and you're kind of screwed........

A drive would be worth it if I could even get one day off, but just for a weekend not really feasible.

I've been going up there every year since forever, so I'm pretty familiar with the drive......which though long, is scenic going up the coast.

I did fly up there once in a private plane, took between two and three hours. That was even more scenic, except for the KC-10 that missed us by 150 yards while we were at about 7000 ft over Clear Lake.

I knew this posting was a longshot. Oh well, my hamstring's still not 100% so not sure I could do the downwinder waves, which is the best part up there........

Im leaving on the 7th or the 14th (pending weather) and am driving. Staying for a week and might be down to ride share if anyone is interested.

If you find somone with a plane let me know. I'd be down for that!! Not much to offer... 100$ and six pack of racer5? How much does it cost to charter a plane? You can fly to Portland and rent a car... might as well hit the gorge though.

Ya... 10hrs unless you want a speeding ticket. Pretty much guarenteed anything over 10mph.

I don't know how I managed the 7 hrs w/out a ticket but the radar detector was a big help. These days it's laser so the radar detector is not such an advantage.

It is possible to fly into Coos Bay commercially.........might have to do that........
