Hey newbies:

After one too many sips of Trader Joe's highly underrated whisky, I made the following post sharing what I've learned about learning to kite:

Hope it helps you guys out. You can reply here or PM me with further questions, or meet me at 3rd ave one day for the lowdown.

I think this BAK is really great. But there are situations where beginners want to ask questions only of other beginners without having their 'stupid questions' and noob-iness stand out, not subject to the [mostly good natured] sarcasm that BAK provides... After all, it can be hard to filter real answers from the crap that can only be understood after being involved in the boards for awhile and understanding the tendencies of frequent posters...

The beginners facebook group has been chugging along well for a year+ and takes an attitude that is different than BAK and complements it well.

Nick,

These are legit reasons to post elsewhere, yet I'd love to see BAK serve all kiters, regardless of ability/experience. If anything, BAK should be a safe place to ask any question, regardless of how 'stupid' it seems to a more experienced rider. Geez, if you can't ask a question of a fellow kiter, who IS it safe to ask? That's the whole point of such a forum, right?

I'll chat with Ollie and see if he has any ideas on this subject.

Stand by...

I think BAK is one of the friendliest forums around for kiters...especially beginners.

There are many others that are way overboard with drama and crap.

My $.02

I think we can provide what it is that some of the new kiters feel will be useful and can provide the help and answers they need. I agree that everyone should be able to post questions and get legit answers.

Yes, sometimes in the General Discussion forums you can get some answers which might be smug, sarcastic or humorous, but we can simply create a new forum called "New Kiters/Beginners Group" and have a fair and strict rule in place that no one post the kinds of answers that can cloud the question/topic and confuse anyone (i.e. no "joke" replies, sarcasm, etc.). After all, one of the purposes of this forum is for precisely what you are seeking.
