Buying a Slingshot.Breaking it down.2010 Fuel, RPM, Octane

Post by shymac » Tue Oct 06, 2009 11:42 am

I was cruising the UK forums and came across a killer break down for customers to understand what/which Slingshot kite might work for who? Copy and pasted it from Kiteitright.com in the UK. One of the best shop's that support SS in the area. I enjoyed there thoughts and I thought you would too. :partyman:

Slingshot Fuel 2010

The Ultimate all round freestyle kite, with old school full switched on power, light wind performance, which makes the great for heavier riders. You will find yourself on the 9 when everyone else is on 11s and 12s. This is a great kite to go for if you really love hanging on in strong winds trying to tame the beast, it really is in many people’s eyes what the sport was originally about. Pushing your “cave man” buttons, huge excitement with a mix of being just a little afraid! But there is nothing really to be afraid of; it’s without a doubt one of most the most stable, predictable and easy to handle kites ever produced. It comes free of “funny business” Simplicity at its best, nothing you don’t really need, no gizmos or gimmicks to get in the way, it’s just there to be used for one purpose. The Fuel has one disadvantage and that is its narrow wind-ranges, so often a two kite quiver can be a struggle in the broad range of winds we get in Europe, 7 and an 11 work well but 7 9 and 11 are highly recommended if you fancy this as your main kite. Impressive features are its huge pop and smooth power delivery. When you pop, there is no huge yank; it’s a slow smooth period of power. This is the ultimate kite to learn mega loops on. Despite the power many may find intimidating, it’s very predictable, and it’s this predictability that you need to learn risky aerial manoeuvres . Bar feel is tuned so pristinely, it feels like a fine sports car, you can feel everything the kite it doing. If it’s bouncing around on bumpy wind you can feel it in your finger tips, and it’s this that really gives the fuel that benchmark old school weapon that delivers unrivalled excitement.

Slingshot RPM.

Not just another SLE, slingshot has developed the practical freestyle kite! The Kite that suits everyone, it does everything well. It sits in the middle of the range. Easy to Fly, easy to use, with unbeatable performance. It looks remarkably similar to a fuel in the sky, just not quite as arced and with a deeper canopy. It delivers superb wake-style performance and offers real and distinct advantages over the fuel for wake style and competition riding. With great low wind pop and performance. You can hang onto each size in a bigger variety of winds compared to let’s say a 9m fuel, so you don’t have to worry so much about selecting the right size kite for your quiver, and in most cases its usually 10m weather no matter how gusty the wind is. An increase in wind speed won’t worry you like the fuel; you can stay out and keep enjoying your 10m session. Although the kite uses the same bar as the Fuel there is more available shut off power on the bar. So getting spanked significantly less painful. Unhooked kite-loops are fantastic on this kite, and it really gives you the time to learn passes as more float is available for you to get it right! Bar feedback on a similar level to the Fuel, very precise with a lot of feedback, remarkable for a bridled kite. Slightly lighter bar pressure than the Fuel.

Many of you will be toying with the idea of Fuel or RPM in your next Quiver of kites. It’s a difficult choice. If you are keen to stick to two kites, then I think the RPM is the more sensible option, as to get the most out of the Fuel you really need three sizes. All Wake styles should choose the RPM, no quibbles it oozes wake, and if you enjoy mega loops, high winds, and being just a bit scared id reconsider the Fuel!

Slingshot Octane

Very Wave specific. And as the wave rider club grows this isn’t a kite you should ignore. The brand new kite off the blocks... or is it? Many have said it’s just a Rev 3 but don’t be fooled, although it looks remarkably like the Rev, there are definitely new found performance qualities hidden within its modest looks. Where I found the rev to stall a little on down turns off the waves, this octane powered through and kept up the speed, and it’s very noticeable, and something a new buyer will welcome. Power delivery has also improved. Its doesn’t bounce around so much, Bar pressure is much lighter than the RPM and Fuel, and one distinct advantage this kite has over the rest of the range is the ability to shut off the power. This is something the RPM doesn’t do as well, which is why this kite is so good for wave-riding and newcomers to the water. Again like all modern Slingshot kites, the Octane is beautifully behaved, no funny business making it a welcoming introductory kite for all who venture into the water.
