as some people are worried about the consequences, I see the Berkeley Ecology Center is having a meeting on this with a few experts to explain the situation and what may happen:

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on April 7th in a meeting of Audits and Oversights Committee,

A videotape of this hearing can be viewed at SFGTV,
http://sanfrancisco.granicus.com/ViewPu ... view_id=11SFBOS hearing April 7 2008

The first speaker is Robert Dowell of CA Dept of Food and Agriculture, this presentation runs up to about the first hour.
Sup Sandoval questions him at about 01:00:00.

Testimony at this hearing worth watching :
(just scroll forward in the timeline)

01:24:15
Dr James Kerry, prof of entomology UC Davis
states that LBAM is not a recent invader,
and that eradication is not possible.
Also asserts that Trade Policy needs to be reviewed re this issue.

01:39:30
Carolyn Cox, director of the Center for Environmental Health, Oakland
who states, bio-pesticides are not subject to testing as other pesticides.

01:48:20
Mike Lindburg(Sp?) citizen, writer communications consultant,
and the person who volunteered to compile a report on complaints of the spraying in Monterey & santa cruz (when no govt agency did).

02:08:50
Dr Daniel Harter, Director of Arboretum UC Santa Cruz,
Presents his research on the control of LBAM in New Zealand.
Many arguments against aerial spraying, particularly collateral damage.

A lot of the general public testimony is also worthy of attention.

(Yikes! looks like human experimentation without informed consent!)

There is no connection between the red tide and the spraying, it's already been disproven.

Also, none of the adverse reactions can be scientifically linked to the spray. People reported reactions in areas that were sprayed with plain water as a control.

There is alot of misinformation being put out there by irresponsible groups. Pheromones are not pesticides; they don't kill anything and are used in infinitesmal concentrations. If CDFA fails to take action against the moth, they will forced to use much more toxic materials.

It says 10M, but it's really a 9.

There does seem to be a lot of disagreement about the facts. I imagine that there is probably some inaccuracy on both sides, it would be good to have more clarity.

We have some arguments from concerned citizens of various professions who are putting long unpaid hours into fighting this.

And then there is the CDFA's agenda.

I don't understand why CDFA hasn't researched a variety of other options for dealing w the moth, such as using natural predators. Flying planes over cities and smothering everything with Checkmate, just does not seem like a good idea to me.

Also people seem to be worried about the other so called "inert" ingredients in the spray, not so much the pheromones.
