NWS extended forecast for Sacto/Tahoe:(I would say based on the rain amounts they're talking about, this is not going to be a really enjoyeable storm to kite)
The forecast of cyclogenesis off the California coast ensures extremely windy conditions for norcal as well. Pressure forecasts indicate about a 17 mbs gradient from SAC-mfr while back on 12/12/1995 the gradient was a whopping 20 mbs. Wind gusts of 60 to over 80 miles per hour were observed over a wide area of northern California and resulted in numerous power outages in the north state. Although the forecast is not quite that strong yet...we will see if this pattern produces a storm of historical or biblical proportions. Jhm Extended discussion...GFS and Euro models still point to a significant weather event from Thursday through Sunday. The Gulf of Alaska will host a persistent upper low during this period as several storms rotate into the West Coast. The first storm should move into the SAC valley by late Thursday morning followed by a second storm on Friday afternoon/evening. A third storm will push through by Sunday afternoon with showers lingering into Monday. Light to moderate rain will be likely from Thursday-sun with heavier rain during storm passages. During this timeframe GFS BUFKIT indicates 5-6 inches of rain around the SAC metropolitan area...7 inches at Redding...and a possible 10 inches for Grass Valley. Several feet of snow will fall at higher elevations with snow levels around 5500 feet lowering near 4000 feet by Sunday. Besides significant precipitation this event will also induce very strong southerly winds ahead of the fronts on Thursday...Friday and Sunday morning. Sustained winds up to 30 miles per hour in the valley and 50 miles per hour or greater in the mountains are possible. Paul
aka Pablito It says 10M, but it's really a 9.
Yeah, the NWS is talking about this series of storms to be some of the biggest in the last 50 years. I'd say snow season is about to to get awesome. So much for la nina.
But, yeah I wouldn't want to kite in this stuff. Team rider for Sheldon Kiteboarding and North
Here's Waddell's last day of the year, very mellow but a nice day.
