Philip, if you want to go, I'd wait till the last minute to book a flight. At that point, if the airlines have more than a handful of unfilled seats, they will be super discounted. There won't be any problems for lodging so if you can handle the possible disappointment of not being able to get a flight last minute, you should be good to go. Priceline is also an option but if the airlines are charging $1200 now, it means they either don't have many seats left or are seeing strong demand. So I bet that would work best the week before.
If you decide to go, send me a PM to arrange hooking-up with the crew down there.

A couple of tips:
If you can fly to Liberia instead of San Jose, its much better. Its very close to playa copal, close enough that local cabs will do it. Its also a nice and friendly town instead of a big and dangerous city which San Jose is.
Wind variance in that place was huge in the two weeks that I was there. There were days that it was too windy (too windy I donít mean small kite, I mean not kiteable anymore) and about a third of the days you needed a floaty surf board.
This makes Jeff's kite rental deal a good option, since he has a bunch of sizes. Same with boards, taking two boards is actually a bigger problem than taking two kites.
I am jealous, have fun.

The Arenal area is a nice place to visit even if you donít plan to do any water sport. It looks close on the map, but the drive is more than it appears. Another option is to go down the west coast all the way to Tamarindo. In both routes you will see a lot of tourists.
4x4 is good if you plan on driving those trips, especially down the west coast.
For the record Advantage rent a car refused to give us the price we booked with them from the US, and wanted like 3 times more, be prepared. The guy in charge at that office was a total crook.
