I calculate her head to be 19.16 feet above the water. Pretty good, but I've seen her go much higher many times.Any guesses on her altitude in that photo?
Remember, Michelle, you gotta watch out for low flying planes at Sherman now!

There's a joke hidden in that equation that only Dave gets, right?
Michelle looks higher up than that to me.
All I know is, it's a good thing there's not a bunch of people sitting on that island holding their fingers out in front of them saying, "I am crushing you with my fingers", cuz otherwise, we'd all be toast.

There is no joke in that equation, although there is an error - the amount of work required to lift Dave 18 ft in the air is about 6300 J (joules), not 6300 N (newtons). If he were to free-fall from that height, as he almost did a few minutes later when his kite nearly collapsed mid-flight, then he would be traveling about 34 mph on impact.
I calculated the height of Dave's and Michelle's jumps by using the measuring tool in Photoshop to measure the distance from their heads to their feet (compensating for the bent posture in Dave's case), and then dividing by their body heights, to get the image scales at their distances. For Michelle: about 3 pixel/ft. I don't remember Dave's. I then measured from the lowest point on their bodies to the point on the water directly below them. for Michelle: about 57. This is where the big uncertainty comes in, since I have to guess where on the water that is. Dividing these values by the image scales calculated above gives the heights of their jumps.
The spot I used in Michelle's case was just a bit beyond the nearby 200 ft buoy. The result was the rediculously precise but likely somewhat innacurate value of 19.16. ft. Best case would be if she was only at the distance of the buoy, which gives about 24 ft.
The bottom line is that both Michelle and Dave go big, and it's a lot of fun to watch and photograph them :)

Ahhh PHYSICS! Ain't it grand? (I actually enjoyed my physics classes-- I know-- NERD!) Yeah, it's the family JOULES. And yes, I was dropping at 34 mph when I fell from the sky during the jellyfish event.

Dave, image 153 is of the jump where your kite went berserk, and you can see it's partially collapsed. I didn't take another shot on that jump, so there's no way to tell how much more it collapsed.
