New Kiter

We will be going out to Alameda this Thursday if anyone want's to join us (if it blows that is)

We are from Sacramento and are both in the learning stage but we are up and rideing.

We plan to leave Sacramento by 9am and that should put is in Alameda by about 11.

We will get some lunch, hit the shop and then the beach be 1pm

We plan to kite till 5 or 6pm

You are all welcome at Alameda. Just read the posted rules and don't be afraid to ask questions or for help. We would rather help you out then watch you get launched into a tree. Yes, I have seen a person get launched into a tree at Alameda. I think it was fatal. It really happens. But only by people who do not kite safely and learn!

The guy in the tree (Jeremy) didn't die, but he did have a lengthy hospital stay and was very fortunate to fully recover.
He is in my circle of friends and I wish I had known that he was getting into kiting and I would have shown him the ropes.
He has given up kiting.

Glade to hear Jeremy made a full recovery!! Thats GREAT!!!!
I'm stoked to hear of you guys (and girls) getting togather to learn. Help each other out and you'll learn faster and remain safe (on the beach etc...). Take turns walking down a few blocks then riding, helping with landings/launches...Just dont FLY/WALK kites near the radio reciever pole), thats a NO-NO!!

and remember to error on the side of caution. If you think is too much for you put it off for another day. Already this season I have seen 3 kites slam into the trees with newbie's that are too stoked listen to reason. Last week in the delta a newbie put up a 14m when I came in on a 10m lit. I tried to tell him that it was way too much kite, but he was too stoked to listen. I saw him floating down the river on my way home.

Although I don't think it'll be too windy at Alameda, when the locals say it's too much listen.

and really - don't be shy to ask the locals and experienced kiters if you are not sure about how to do something right...chosing the kite, rigging, launching...even deflating (I witnessed a "Mr.Bean" like comedy when a guy tried to deflate his kite but held it into wind really funny so he got wrapped all around and then fell tangled onto the ground and tried to free himself ).

Often an experienced kiter will walk up to you and offer or give advice if they see that you are new and doing things the "newbie" way. Don't feel offended....even if they sometimes look serious and not charming....it's a good idea to listen to their advice (ask them how long they are kiting though).

Ask, ask, ask...or if nobody is around to ask:

"In case of doubt - don't do it (that's my kiting mantra)..."

Alameda is a bit naasty right now so unless you want to come out of the water glowing you might want to sit out a couple days.
