I only do that on land when there's no give beneath my feet so it REALLY hurts.

Ollie-
Twice! Over the years I've dropped wake boards with the board on my thighs as you discribed only I fumbled changing hands or something and smashed my toe!
Maybe- just grab it by the boot cuff and skim it along beside you for safty..

Baypirate & Michael: that was my board that you guys rescued on Monday and I can't thank both of you enough for risking it out there.
I was about half an hour or so into my sess, when a major gust hit me right when I was loading up my lines. Threw off my timing and it just yanked me from my board and shot me waaaaaaay downwind of it...
:o after dragging around for a while w/o seeing it, I decided to head back in before my fingers and toes fell off when I saw Michael prepping to launch....
Don't know how you managed to get it back (especially after seeing how tough it can actually be) but I'm thankful that you did and MORE IMPORTANTLY glad that you both played it safe in doing so.
Humble thanks again and apologies for cutting in to both of your sessions on such a great day!
