May I ask a tactical question?

I listened to the.... adequate.... commentary of the races from your link Loscocco. It seems like there are always some kiters that start on port. This sort of flies in the face of everything when it comes to sailboat racing, unless the line and current are extremely favored to one end. By at least 15-20 degrees or so.

Is kiting so fast that one can start on a port and cross all the starboard tackers? Or was the commentator in la-la land? Is it common to get port tackers that cross all the starboards in a kiting race? If so, that seems like too many non-sailors setting a crappy line.
