What should I be practicing?

Whoops! My bad - I read "Naish Helix" not "Naish Torch". I agree, the Torch may not be the best beginner kite.

I'd recommend trying difrerent kites - one of the great benefits of taking lessons - you get to ride (and crash!) their gear and not yours.

Try using a larger board, something with more surface area can really give you the "edge" you need...
