video : Kiting Costa Rica, Nicola Bertoldi

PART 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDOxH69C5Zg

PART 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4urILmS3HRA

I've been making some videos of Nicola and his kite school at Playa Copal.
It is a very beautiful place. The wind can be very strong and gusty in the winter months, especially February when this was shot. When I was there, the length of Nicola's session was always determined by the time it took for one of his footstraps to break off his board.

I have 2 or 3 more related videos, (about Nicola and the kite school, the location, and also a talk w Simone Venucci designer for Royal and formerly w RRD). Together it should give some impression of the place, and what it's like to go there. The others are nearly done, will post them here too.

I got a workout shooting on the beach, I don't use a tripod. A few of the images look soft focus, but in that kind of wind it doesn't take long for the salt water and sand to coat the lens. I am really glad I brought lens filters. I had my camera professionally cleaned when I got back here. (I don't have a jacket for my camera but that would have been a good idea.)

enjoy!

note : in order to post this on Youtube I had to dispute copyright claim in order to use a music track (Warner). Not difficult to do, but the entire audio track was muted until I filed my "fairuse" claim. This got me thinking...
There is a very well made new documentary by Brett Gaylor http://www.ripremix.com/
that discusses copyright/left, and appropriation art, mash-ups, and the story of Mickey Mouse meets Dan O'Neill. (I only wish they had included some more artists, but Girltalk definitely has interesting views).

What a great guy Nicola is. I still remember his giant boosts, "the grasshopper". I think that antique board he shows in the video is what I learned on :)

Thanks for making this-- what great footage! I had an awesome time staying at Nicola's place back in 2005, and your video brought back great memories. Glad to see Nicola is still going strong. Playa Copal, what a freakishly windy and beautiful place!
