I am taking the wife and 2 kids (age 4 and 6) to La Ventana this winter. I will be kiteboarding. They will want to do other things. Any recommendations for the best place for families to stay? The wife is not big on camping - she's more of a resort person.
It looks like Ventana Bay is a good place from reviews online. Any other recs would be appreciated.

I am on the same boat, would be nice to hear from those who have been in LV, as I haven't yet. And having my family with me is what will make it happen...

You can pick up more info from Mike Godsey's Baja Guide
Los Barriles has more civilization for non kiters. And Hotel Palmas de Cortez is a nice resort on the beach: http://www.eastcaperesorts.com/palmas_de_cortez.html
if you have to stay in La Ventana and don't want to stay in arrojos or the campground:
These are on the south end of playa:
Esteban's place, very nice, has restaurant next door. Adjacent to Baja Joes.
casa verde (bajmahal.com but website seems down)

Baja Joes: less expensive, more laid back with communal vibe and nice coffee/bar setup by elevationkite team. also on site kite lessons.
A bit up north
Kurt and Marina's is great.
They have a huge central kitchen area where everyone can cook. Very social. One of the great things about La Ventana is making great meals. There are trucks that sell fresh bread, tortillas, farmers market for fruit/veggies and meats.
Also K and M is centrally located and they will pick you up at the airport.

+1 for communal cooking, we stayed at Baja Joe's one year and it really makes a difference having other people/families around when night hits. Not much else going on at LV, although its starting to change.
We go to Los Barriles early January and have had great wind almost everyday, every time. We chose that over La Ventana because of more options for housing. With grown sons/brother/wife/girlfriends, we find that VRBO houses are much less expensive per person than hotels, even right on the beach. LB is about an hour from the airport, which makes pickups/dropoffs reasonable.
Non-kiter favorites: kayaking in the morning when it's calm (kayaks are often provided with houses, but are quite expensive if you have to rent); snorkeling Cabo Pulmo south of LB (the most amazing snorkeling I've had amongst Sea Lion colonies and massive schools of mantas and other large fish, although the coral reefs are less impressive); local hikes to hot springs; driving into San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas for the day; breakfast on the porch watching whales, dolphins and jumping fish.
