The wind on Friday and Saturday is looking good! Sunday looks like it will be snowing too hard. We're supposed to get 1-2 ft. on the Crest. We're looking forward to a fun weekend!

Discussion:

After a very quiet holiday weekend, slight changes have taken place beginning on Wednesday, however, we just don't have the right ingredients for any decent accumulations. We'll have to continue our wait for the next big dump.



The very strong high pressure ridge that has kept Northern California dry for the majority of January, drifted east on Wednesday as a stream of moisture approached the coast. Although the moisture was abundant, the general south to north direction of the flow lacked dynamics and decent lift over higher elevations. As the precipitation moved into Northern California, it weakened on its track inland. With the combination of a 7000 foot snow level and waning moisture, a light mix fell at the base by Thursday morning with only around an inch on the higher slopes.



The moisture band is moving south on Thursday and is being directed into Southern California by an area of low pressure offshore. A few scattered light rain and snow showers are lingering in the Northern Sierra, but chances decrease through the day as the low pressure center presses a bit more south. Snow levels have risen to around 7500 feet, axing any possible light snow accumulations.



Clouds and a few stray scattered showers with high snow levels will be present on Friday as the area of low pressure treks across Southern California. Most moisture will remain south and little if any will make it as northerly as Sugar Bowl.



As the low pressure center exits into the Desert Southwest on Saturday, a cool and relatively dry system approaches from the north. The majority of the day will be dry, but a few snow showers could develop in the late afternoon, depending on the timing of the approach. Snow chances are more likely overnight. Unfortunately, the system is taking a more inland track and moisture will be limited. The colder air moving in will help squeeze out some accumulations, but they won't be heavy. A couple of inches are possible overnight. Saturday's temperatures will mostly be in the 30s. Southwest winds will perk up on the ridges in the afternoon.



Sunday will be much more brisk as snow showers continue. If conditions are favorable, an additional 2-4 inches may accumulate through the day. Morning temperatures will have dropped into the low to mid 20s and remain steady or fall slowly during the day. Southwest winds will be on the decrease.



After a few lingering snow showers on Monday, the high pressure ridge returns to bring dry weather on Tuesday. Not much activity is seen on the horizon and any strong storms are nowhere to be seen.



Sugar Bowl Snow Depths as of Thursday morning, January 24th:

Station A (near the base of Crow's Nest Chair): 40 inches, down 3 inches since the previous Thursday. Last year at this time: 19 inches.

Station B (between Calif St & Station B runs): 109 inches, down 2 inches since the previous Thursday. Last year at this time: 43 inches.

Current Truckee River Drainage Snowpack Water Equivalent: 121%



Weekend Forecast for 1/26/2013-1/27/2013:

Scattered morning sun with increasing clouds on Saturday. A slight chance of late afternoon snow showers. Lows around 30, highs in the 30s. Afternoon southwest winds to 15 mph, to 40 mph on the ridges.



Cloudy, cooler with occasional snow and snow showers on Sunday. Total accumulations by evening are in the 3-6 inch range. Lows in the low to mid 20s with temperatures steady or slowly falling through the day. Southwest ridge winds to 30 mph.



Weekend Travel Weather:

No weather related road problems Friday and Saturday. If enough snow falls on Sunday, roads will be slippery and chain controls could appear. Snow levels will be relatively low.



Extended:

Snow showers on Monday with little or no additional accumulations. Dry Tuesday and beyond.
