New to Area

Hey Guys,

Been following your forum for a while and finally decided to start posting.

I just relocated from North Carolina to Santa Clara, and spent the last few years in the Outer Banks kiting. I've scoped out 3rd Ave and Coyote Point Park so far. Planning on looking at Alameda as well.

I've been spoiled with waste deep water for the past few years, so deep/cold water will be a new experience.

Just picked up a 4/3 wetsuit, any recommendations as a good place to do my first session in the bay? Any advice on things I should be aware of?

Looking forward to seeing you guys out there!

Hey, welcome!

I think you'll find the crew around here pretty friendly and welcoming.

I'd recommend Alameda if you're used to/like shallow water.

The Northwest clearing/spring winds are just around the corner. You've arrived at the right time!

I'm the guy in the white VW camper van with the "Great Location" sign in the side window. If we cross paths, come say howdy.

Kirk out

Once things warm up and thermals start, you will like Sherman.

+1 Alameda

Come to the Shellgate launch. Max and his crew are super friendly and helpful. Been getting so many great tips on jumping and toeside I hardly go anywhere else.

Alameda to start with and Sherman when it gets warmer.

Awesome, thanks for the input. I have 9/12m Rebels right now, looks like the 12 is a popular kite around that area eh?

I was thinking about adding a 9m RPM but I'm thinking it might be a little small around here, I weight about 175.

Now for the fun of getting the rest of my gear shipped across, those boards are UPS's best friend :)

If the start of the season is any indication, you're going to want a 6... I've used my 5 times already!

If you live in Santa Clara, I would recommend 3rd avenue - much closer than Alameda and the wind is more consistent/stronger once the season gets going.

Definitely agree that Sherman is an awesome spot - however it's also a much longer drive!

Hopefully I'm not hijacking your thread - but I have some questions and this thread seems appropriate...

Anyways, I'm pretty much in the same situation (moved from the southeast with warm water).
I checked out alameda - it seems pretty nice - but I hear it's not too windy. I'm also interested in checking out 3rd ave - but haven't had the chance to drive out there yet. I also just picked up a 4/3 wetsuit. I've been a bit hesitant to get in the cold water since I've never been in very cold water in my life.

Do you guys recommend booties? gloves? etc?
How long do people typically last here in colder water?

Also whats the water like in alameda and 3rd ave?
Is it deep/shallow? Is it full of seaweed?

Any random tips from someone who has only been in warm water?

Well, our bay is not the cleanest but certainly better than the waste water you have been kiting in and the water here at the coast will be much cleaner for sure.
