Let's not forget that Sherman is a county park and all are welcome (including the fishermen who we'd like to cut their lines sometimes). We all have a responsibility to make sure that people who shouldn't (aren't ready yet) launch at Sherman don't but no localism please! Sherman is the best spot around so of course it will get crowded sometimes.

Amen Dave!!
On Wednesday I talked to a newbi that had his girlfriend launch his 11m Waroo in 35mph winds. I tried to talk him out of launching it, but of course he knew better than I did. Once he got to the water he came back to the upper launch and landed his kite. It's his first season, and he is self tought (scary).
Last week I stopped a guy from launching his 16m Areo when I just came in on my 10m. Also at the upper launch.
For some reason Newbi's are not going to Alameda anymore, they are going straight to the Delta, and lauching in the back.
What are the locals to do?

I had a playful discussion with a kiter friend at Sherman this weekend about what exactly constitutes a sherman local. Is it if you live nearby and only kite there and no where else, is it if you live there in a trailer on weekends throughout the season, etc. Ultimately we, and others, agreed that no one, other than Bob and Mina who are there year round, rain or shine, windy or not, is really a "local". Do you live there? Does your PG&E biull get sent to you at Sherman Island in the park? Is that where you get your mail? It's a county park, all you need to do is pay your day use fee or get your annual pass and you're in.
With that said, if people come to Sherman to kite who generally don't kite there often, all they need to do is be an intermediate to advanced kiter, be safe, follow the rules and show others respect. Roll up your lines, stack your kites, give right of way when needed and make friends. Kiting is an inclusive sport, don't make it an exclusive sport by making statements that make it sound like you have any more right to it than anyone else. Everyone who kites at Sherman has been a "tourist" at one point too, and some have been more recent than others. Build community, don't separate it.

I like the idea of having one of my bills sent there. that way I can say "what do you mean I ain't a local...LOOK at my bill!"
Sherman is a magical place. It's waters have healing powers like no other place I have ever kited. Just the drive there feels like a mini vacation. So of course everyone wants a claim to this "Disneyland" for kiters/windsurfers.
My personal experience is that EVERYONE has been super nice up there with the exception of some of the little shits that think they own the place enough that they can jump over people while they are rigging. But their stupidity and juvenile attitude is easily washed away and forgotten after a great Sherman session.
And heres another question for the regulars. 3 people past by me as i was stopped to pay my fee at the gate. How many people feel they are too good to not help maintain their own kitopia? Is there something i don't know about where that money goes? Maybe the little shits use it for beer money.
