hey everyone
I'm 15 (almost 16) years old and have been looking into starting kiteboarding and taking lessons in alemeda this spring, but after looking around on the web for a while, I've noticed that a lot of kiteboarders are older, around 30ish. Do you think 15 is too young to start kiting? and what is the average age for kiters in the bay area?

Thanks for your input,
taro

Hey Taro,

I would say the main reason why the average age is in the 30's would be the cost. Getting started in kiteboarding would be pretty damn hard for a 16 y.o. Lessons aren't cheap, gear isn't cheap and chasing the wind isn't cheap. Also i think alot of the younger kids don't know about the sport. You are going to need your parents to sign the waiver for the lessons. I'm sure the person giving the lessons will warn your parents of the dangers of the sport. Some parents are very protective of their little baby and may not let you get lessons. I"m sure this has happened to kids your age.

I do not think 16 is too young. If you look in the magazine there are kids your age and younger just killing it. There is a kid at sherman island who is 9 who kites.

I think one thing that is important to someone your age getting into kiting is to THINK. I feel quite a few in your age bracket just do things with out thinking of the consequences. Doing that while kiting (lauching, on the water, landing) could be the last thing you ever did. Just think and you will be fine.

Karo, get a trainer kite and fly the crap out of it this winter during storms or whenever it is windy. You will kiting in no time with plent of trainer time under your belt.
